Publisher reporting on Steam: every game, every payout, one set of numbers

Publisher reporting is the routine of telling developers, partners and finance what each Steam game did: yesterday's changes every morning, last week every Monday, each month's net revenue and its payout date, and what each game is expected to earn by year end and beyond. SteamStats builds all four from each game's own Steamworks data.

The reporting cycle of a portfolio of Steam games
WhenWhat is reportedWhere it comes from
Every morningDaily report: one item each morning with yesterday's notable changes and a table of your gamesEvery game in the organization
Every MondayWeekly report: one item each Monday with last week for all your gamesEvery game, over the full week
When a month closesEach game's net revenue for the sales monthValve closes the month at midnight Pacific time
By the 30th of the next monthThe payout for that monthValve pays each sales month in US dollars
Any dayExpected net to studio to year end and over the first year, per gameThe forecast, refreshed daily on Indie, Studio, and Publisher

Days in every report start at midnight in the organization's time zone, so a daily report means the same day for every game. Payout months are the exception and follow Valve's month, so their totals match Valve's own statements.

Questions publishers ask

  • Which games moved yesterday, and which moved outside their usual range?
  • How did last week compare across all games?
  • What did each game earn this month after refunds, VAT, Steam's share and US tax?
  • When does each payout land, and which months are confirmed?
  • What is each game expected to earn by year end and beyond, and what changed the forecast?
  • Who on the team, or at a partner studio, can see the numbers without changing anything?
  • Can the same alerts reach the publisher's own tools?

In a portfolio the same chain runs for every game, and the Money view adds net by game and the months ahead, so the publisher's figure and each developer's figure come from one calculation.

Plans

Publisher is a custom per-game quote with invoicing for studios and agencies from 10 games or 2 Steamworks accounts. Smaller portfolios use the same reports on Indie and Studio, priced per game.
