SteamStats vs Gamalytic and VG Insights: estimates or your own reports

Gamalytic and Video Game Insights estimate sales, revenue and players for games across Steam from public signals, which suits market research. SteamStats does not estimate other games' sales: it reads one studio's own Steamworks reports with its key, so the figures for that studio's games are Steam's own.

Gamalytic's About page lists where its estimates are weaker, such as smaller games, free-to-play games and bundle revenue, and advises checking any estimate. Accuracy figures that vendors publish about their own estimates are not repeated here; their pages are linked below.

When Gamalytic or VG Insights is the better choice

  • Sizing a genre or a market before a game exists: estimated revenue for thousands of released games is what these tools are built for.
  • Researching competitors' sales, publishers' catalogues or which tags earn the most.
  • Console data: Video Game Insights covers Xbox and PlayStation as well as Steam.
  • API access for an analyst or publisher team: Gamalytic's paid plans include API requests.

When SteamStats is the better fit

  • Running a game that is out or coming soon, where exact wishlists, units, refunds and payouts matter more than an estimate.
  • Launch weeks and campaigns, when sales and wishlists need to be current within the day.
  • Cash planning: net to studio after Steam's share and withholding, payout dates and a forecast to year end and beyond.
  • Alerts for the studio's own games and a team view across several of them.

Why an estimate and a report differ

An estimator sees what is public: review counts, player counts, ranks and prices. Gamalytic, for example, models units from those signals and adjusts them with sales figures that have been disclosed publicly, so any single game can sit above or below its estimate. A Steamworks report is Valve's own record of the game's sales. Comparing an estimate with a studio's own report is one of the few ways to see how far off an estimate is for a particular kind of game.

The two can work together: an estimator to look outward at the market, and the studio's own reports to run the game.
